I got up really late today, but I needed a proper sleep after running on empty. I also took about an hour to get ready, I guess it was nice to just drag my feet. Bjorn was downstairs happily fiddling around with his new phone.
I went down and had breakfast then we were off to Ypres. On the way there we stopped by these amazing windmills. We don't really have windmills in the part of Canada that I live in, so I always get excited when I see them. Each windmill has a cool name and a cartoon character!
Driving into Ypres was amazing, what a beautiful city. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it was impressing me a lot more then Brussels, maybe it was because the weather was on our side. First we went to to the war museum, which was well done and fun. Afterwards it was time to eat, We had pancakes and waffles of course at this lovely little restaurant. I don't think either of us wanted to leave we were perfectly happy stuffing down our food and getting covered in icing sugar in the process.
After eating we walked around town and went to a couple of churches. Then of course as luck would have it mother nature called and I needed to visit the chemist, but apparently the chemist didn't understand that I was looking for "Tampons" in my accent, Bjorn had to interject, he pretty much said exactly what I did, but of course with his Belgian accent and they understood. Strange and embarrassing.
After that we visited Vichte, the town that Bjorn grew up in. It's not very big, but it's absolutely stunning especially at sunset. I wish i had more time to walk around and explore.
Then we went to the grocery store so I could buy some food to cook up for the dinner I was making for everyone. When I got back, I put myself, Bjorn and Jorunn to work right away. I forgot how difficult it can be getting around somebody else's kitchen, but I had lots of fun. Bjorn even gave my mash and special and appreciated touch. When it came down to topping the pre-dish with mozzarella I was expecting shredded cheese but instead I got this big glob of watery cheese fall into my bowl. Yuk! What was in the bowl was Pretty much ruined, I guess that's what they call mozzarella in Belgium, it doesn't come in a brick or shredded instead it's some watery ball substance they call cheese! The rest of dinner went off well, except I made too much food. More booze and conversing was had! I had my first Duvel, which is a really nice strong beer and also Jupiler.
Many hostels organize sightseeing tours for groups and helping travelers explore the place.
