AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS - LIGHT UP

Belgium, Day 4 /Amsterdam, Day 1

I got up early for the first time since I got to Belgium, I had to catch the train out of Waregem to Brussels so I could take another train to Amsterdam.
I had gotten most of my stuff ready the night before so I wouldn't have to bother as much in the morning. I dragged my backpack down Bjorn & Wendy's fancy stair case without falling!

Jorunn was up, as she was going to day care. I was going to miss her, so I wanted to spend some time with her that morning. We played for a bit, then I got her breakfast ready, I cleaned her up. Then it was time for Wendy to drop me off at the train station, I said my goodbyes to Bjorn as he was staying home with Wolf. Jorunn wouldn't have any of it when I went to say goodbye to her at the train station, she was upset that I was leaving.

Goodbye Waregem

My only companion!

I took a Thalys train to Amsterdam, again I passed out and woke up somewhere in Rotterdam, the entire trip took about an hour and half.
I reluctantly unglued myself from my seat when I got to central station. Next I had to do what I always hate doing, search for my hostel. This is one of my biggest peeves about travelling, it's always a pain when you enter a new city or country and you've got to find an address. I knew my hostel was close to central station, but all the maps and directions seemed useless. Already I was avoiding bikes and trams, which isn't' easy when you've got a heavy backpack on your shoulders. I ended up walking one direction for a while, then another direction, then another, finally I asked someone who pointed me in a way that I understood. I ended up finding my hostel, the famous Flying Pig. I have to say this is the best located hostel I have ever stayed it, it's right in the middle of a busy shopping street that has everything you can imagine. After taking a big whiff of weed, I walked into the hostel and checked in. The hostel definitely had an interesting vibe to it, the first thing I noticed was how dimly lit it was, normally hostels are so bright, but I guess when your stoned that's the last thing you want. I was staying in a huge dorm, about 14 beds or so, but it was sort of divided in the middle with a bathroom on each side.

I put my bag down with the intention to rest, I was feeling a bit down since leaving Belgium. I was surrounded by awesome people there and now I was suddenly on my own again. Despite the slight 'depression', I was still itching to go out and explore and that I did. I wandered around the main streets, down to dam square and got some food. When I got back to my hostel, my room was full of roommates, on the far side there were a group of (Argentinian?) guys there, I'm not sure where they were from, but it was clear they didn't speak English and they didn't make any effort to interact. Besides travelling couples, this is by far the worst type of group of people you can meet at a hostel, they give new meaning to the word 'ANTI SOCIAL' as they just stick to each other. Luckily I had a cool roommate above me from Chicago named Adrian and there was a cool German guy in the bunk near mean called Oli. We made plans to go out later that night. Me and the guys got cleaned up and we headed down to the bar for drinks, after it was time to visit the famous red light district. Wow, the sight of women wearing nothing but bras and panties gyrating in the windows was crazy. I thought the women would be average, being prostitutes and all, but they were stunners! Of course they had windows for all tastes, big, small, young, old, exotic, plain, trannys (Blue lights)...you name it. What surprised me was when they would knock on the window to get your attention, and sometimes open the door to beckon you in. I have to say, this is a great place for people watching and seeing whats going on. We ended up wandering to the I am Amsterdam sign and took some pictures, then we went to the Coffee shop. Me and Oli ordered a joint and a space cake, but Adrian decided to keep it safe due to work. It was a strange feeling being served a joint on a platter and not having to hide in some corner. I knew since we got a pre-rolled joint it wasn't going to be that good, but we had fun smoke it anyway. I had a couple of bites of the space cake (which looks like a cupcake), but I didn't like the taste that much, even though it's suppose to be Vanilla. Then we went to a pub, we had a good spot where we could watch all the window action, which is quite enthralling. We went wandering around again after that, looking for food, looking at women. It was a fun night, definitely the uplift I needed.

Gotta have an Amstel!
